George I. Gaviria, M.D.
Hair Transplant Surgeon
Dr. George Gaviria has worked in the trenches of medicine; from his volunteer work with the remote Indian Tribes of Central America, to providing medical services for the impoverished people in the mountain regions and coffee plantations of Columbia, to tackling the traumas of Emergency Medicine. His compassion for his patients is tireless and unwavering. When a patient came to him with symptoms of sudden, excessive hair shedding, Dr. Gaviria began research on what would develop into an article on a condition known as Tellogen Effluvium. As a result of his research, Dr. Gaviria began to feel passionate about the importance of helping patients suffering from hair loss. He began pursuing hair restoration surgery as his specialty under the tutelage of renowned hair transplant surgeon, Professor Walter P. Unger, MD, of the Johns Hopkins Cosmetic Center near Baltimore. "Although hair transplantation surgery is very elaborate and meticulous work, there are not many fields of medicine where you can consistently bring such a high level of satisfaction to your patients" said Dr. Gaviria.
Seeking to perfect his surgical skills, Dr. Gaviria applied for the prestigious MHR fellowship in Hair Transplantation Surgery. Upon his acceptance into the coveted program, he began training under the direction of Dr. Matt Leavitt, the Founder and Medical Director of Medical Hair Restoration. "Medical Hair Restoration's philosophy combines surgery and research," stated Dr. Gaviria, "Using this approach, MHR is always ahead of the field in providing the best techniques, coupled with the best surgical instrumentation, to provide patient's with the highest quality hair transplantation procedure possible."
Dr. Gaviria graduated with Honors with a Medical Degree in Medicine & Surgery from the Institute of Health Sciences in Medellín, Colombia. Following a research fellowship at the esteemed Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, Dr. Gaviria completed his surgical residency at the Advanced Cardiology Center and Ponce School of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico. He has done significant research studies and numerous scientific presentations on hair loss, and has authored book chapters on the subject.
For Dr. Gaviria, the most satisfying aspect of being a hair transplant surgeon is simply helping people to be happier. His top priority as a physician has always been to build a strong relationship with his patients in order to offer them the best treatment available. "When my patient's come back for their follow-up visits, there's a transformation that happens," smiled Dr. Gaviria, "It's not just the increased volume of hair on their head, but an increase of confidence and inner joy. It's an amazing thing to witness and I'm proud to be a partner in their transformation."
