Melvin L. Mayer, M.D.
Hair Transplant Surgeon & MHR Patient
The winner of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery's 2004 Platinum Follicle Award, Dr. Melvin Mayer is the Regional Director of Medical Hair Restoration. Dr. Mayer first became interested in hair restoration during his 20th high school reunion when he was voted baldest in the class. This catalyst inspired him to learn more about hair restoration. He studied every book and article he could find, evaluating hair transplant physicians, their surgical techniques and the results they achieved. He used this information both personally and professionally. Dr. Mayer had the procedure himself and then decided to become a hair transplant surgeon. The experience provided him with a keen sense of what patients go through as they make decisions about their own hair loss.

In 1992, Dr. Mayer joined Medical Hair Restoration (MHR) as a surgeon. "I joined MHR due to the high quality of work being done and due to Dr. Matt Leavitt's vision," he said. Then, in 1994, he became a Regional Director for Medical Hair Restoration.
Dr. Mayer's accomplished career is due to his philosophy for successful hair restoration surgery: honesty, top quality work, integrity, empathy and understanding. Having undergone the procedure himself, Dr. Mayer has a greater sensitivity toward his patients. "I encourage my patients to start early in their process of hair restoration. By waiting too long myself, I was almost bald before I turned to hair restoration."
"One of my most memorable and satisfying experiences was working with a patient who first had hair restoration surgery when he was 18 years old," Dr. Mayer recalled. "He had large plugs placed in his temporal region by another surgeon. By the time he came to me 12 years later, he had balded away from the plugs. The situation had him extremely depressed. He hadn't been out in public without a hat in 10 years. I restored the hair and connected or removed the previous plugs, which resulted in a complete transformation of his self-esteem."
In 1978, Dr. Mayer founded a private family practice where he served as President until 1992. During that time, he was also Director of Florida Hospital's Family Health Center from 1977-1980. He has written several articles for medical journals and popular magazines. Dr. Mayer has served as an expert speaker at several conventions concerning hair restoration.
