Local Hair Restoration Surgeon Dr. Matt Leavitt Returns From International Meeting with Latest Hair Loss Info
Maitland, FL - Nationally recognized hair loss expert Dr. Matt Leavitt met with colleagues from around the world in New York City last week to present, teach and discuss the latest news in medical and surgical treatments of hair loss - a condition suffered by more than 80 million Americans.
As founder and medical director of Medical Hair Restoration (MHR), Dr. Leavitt lectured and taught surgical techniques at the 11th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) -- the world's largest professional organization of physician hair restoration specialists.
Dr. Leavitt's presentations included 'Lotions and Potions: An Update on the Trendy, Non-Surgical Hair Loss 'Remedies'," as well as an update on an MHR research study on the effects of finasteride (Propecia) taken in conjunction with hair transplantation surgery. He also led a review of the annual Live Surgery Workshop held in Orlando in March.
'It's important to be aware of the latest hair loss potions marketed to men and women every day," said Leavitt. 'Unfortunately, these ineffective treatments give patients false hope, and we need to provide accurate information on true hair loss solutions - hair transplantation to replace the hair you've lost, and approved pharmaceuticals to keep the hair you have."
As one of only four live surgery observational workshops held during the week-long meeting, physicians gathered at MHR's Manhattan office to witness a hair transplant procedure first hand. There, they observed and discussed the latest methods for administering anesthetic, harvesting donor hair, preparing individual hair grafts for transplantation and artistic techniques to achieving the most natural looking hair line.
'The ISHRS meeting provides an excellent forum for doctors from around the globe to share information on current research, tools and techniques to help advance the art and science of hair restoration surgery," said Leavitt.
Dr. Leavitt also taught a section of an advanced review course in hair restoration surgery focused on the anatomy, physiology and histology of the practice. During the meeting, he attended lectures and panel discussions on topics ranging from new surgical tools, pharmaceutical treatments and female hair loss to microscopic surgical techniques, moustache transplants, and the prospect of hair follicle cloning.
The ISHRS announced three research grants at the meeting, and Medical Hair Restoration received two of them. MHR doctors are researching methods to speed healing in the donor and recipient site areas of transplant patients. In addition to ISHRS events, the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery held its annual meeting and elected Dr. Leavitt to serve another two year term on the board. He was an original founding member of this board in 1996, which today stands as the only validated board certification examination dedicated to the specialty of hair restoration surgery. Dr. Leavitt also serves on the ISHRS board of governors. The ISHRS is the largest professional organization for hair restoration surgeons which includes licensed physicians, surgical assistants and students.
